When the days get shorter, the grass grows slower and the last mowing of the year approaches, it's the right time to give your robotic lawnmower some attention. In addition to cleaning and winter preparation, the cutting system is particularly important on the checklist.
Because sharp, freely movable knives are crucial for a clean cutting result. The end of the season is therefore the ideal time to thoroughly check the blades of your Mammotion robotic lawnmower - and replace them immediately if necessary. So your LUBA or YUKA starts the new season in spring with a clean and well-maintained mower.
Why sharp knives are so important
A robotic lawnmower does not cut the lawn like a classic rotary mower with a heavy, fixed blade. Depending on the model, Mammotion uses several small, pivoting blades on one or more cutting discs.
If these blades are sharp and can move freely, the blades of grass are cut cleanly. However, as the operating time increases, the cutting edges wear out. In addition, earth, sand, small branches and other foreign objects can put strain on the blades.
Blunt or damaged blades can be noticeable, among other things, in a less clean cut, frayed blades of grass or an overall decrease in cutting performance. Mammotion therefore recommends checking the cutting system regularly.
When should the Mammotion knives be changed?
For the Mammotion Endurance replacement blades available in Switzerland, it is recommended that the blades be rounded Turn around after 50 hours of operation and replace after around 100 hours of operation. The information is based on tests with Zoysia grass and may vary depending on the type of lawn, property, soil conditions and operating conditions.
A simple rule therefore makes sense for Swiss Mammotion users: Keep an eye on operating hours and at the same time check the actual condition of the knives. If blades are damaged, severely worn or the quality of the cut decreases, they should be replaced regardless of the number of hours achieved.
Which is why the end of the season is a good time
During the main season, the robotic lawnmower is on the move regularly. Maintenance work is then often postponed until later - especially if the lawn still needs to be mowed.
Things look different at the end of the season. The robot is being cleaned and prepared for the winter break anyway. This provides the opportunity to thoroughly inspect the underside, cutting discs and knives at the same time.
This has another advantage: If worn blades are replaced during the winter, the robotic lawnmower is immediately ready in the spring with a serviced cutting system. Instead of having to look for replacement blades and carry out maintenance work when the grass first starts growing vigorously, the new mowing season can begin straight away.
Changing Mammotion knives – step by step

Switch off the robotic lawnmower completely. Before carrying out any work on the cutting system, switch off the robot completely. If your model is equipped with one, also remove the safety key.

Wear protective gloves. Even used blades can be sharp. Mammotion therefore requires protective gloves to be worn when checking, cleaning and replacing knives.

Place the robot on a clean, soft surface. When the robotic lawnmower is switched off, carefully turn it over. For models with cameras or vision modules, be particularly careful not to put any strain on them when putting them down.

Remove old knives by hand. Use a suitable hand screwdriver. Mammotion expressly advises against using an electric screwdriver when working on cutting discs or knives.

Clean the cutting disc and underside. Remove grass residue, soil and debris with a brush. Do not use sharp objects to clean the bottom.

Replace knife completely. Mammotion recommends replacing all blades and their associated screws at the same time. Old knife screws should not be reused. Use suitable original blades and the mounting hardware intended for your model.

Control mobility. Once assembled, each pivoting blade must be securely attached and still be able to move freely. At the same time, check whether the cutting disc can also rotate freely.

Carry out final inspection. Check again that all blades are fully assembled and that there are no tools or loose parts in the area of the mower deck.
An important point: Do not simply reuse screws and fasteners
When changing knives it's not just about the blades themselves. We expressly recommend that to replace all knives and their screws at the same time. Old screws should not be reused.
Therefore, use a replacement blade set that is suitable for your Mammotion and follow the instructions for your specific model when it comes to washers and other fastening parts. Individual model generations may differ in the structure of the cutting system.

Cleaning is part of changing knives
A new set of blades is of little use if thick layers of grass and soil have accumulated under the cutting disc. Therefore, use the blade change to thoroughly clean the mower.
We recommend a soft brush for the underside. At the same time, knives and cutting discs should be checked for damage and freedom of movement. Sharp objects should not be used when cleaning.
Grass residue can quickly collect on the blades and underside, especially if you mow damp lawns frequently. This can impact performance and require more frequent cleaning intervals.
Changed knives? Then the winter break can come
After the last mowing, it is worth combining the blade check directly with the rest of the winter maintenance. We recommend cleaning the robot before long-term storage, allowing it to dry completely and charging the battery to at least 80 percent.
For long-term storage, we recommend a temperature range of -10°C to 40°C. If the ambient temperatures fall below -10 °C, the mower must be brought indoors according to the manufacturer.
This means that the cleaning, cutting system and battery are prepared - and the robotic lawnmower can start again in the spring without unnecessary maintenance backlog.
Our tip for the end of the season
Don’t wait until the first day of mowing next spring to check the blades.
When winterizing your Mammotion robotic lawnmower, check how many operating hours the blades have had, whether they are damaged or heavily worn and whether they can still move freely. If the change is due, do it directly together with the thorough end-of-season cleaning.
